Vince Clarke on Only You: “Once I left Depeche (Mode), I had some songs which I wanted to demo for the record company – one of which being Only You. I got in touch which Alison because I vaguely knew her. I mean we didn’t have plans to form a band or anything. We had no history together. We just went from the demo to the recording studio to making the first record.”

Alison recalls Only You‘s slow-burn success: “It went into the charts at 198. Today, people would just cry and hang themselves. But I was like ‘One hundred and ninety-eight! Out of all the records released! What an incredible thing that was’. And to have this record go up – and the record company would call you and it’s gone up twenty places this week, it’s gone up thirty places this week. And then we’re in the Top 100. Fucking hell! “

Don’t Go was offered by the band as a B-side for the single but it was deemed too good not to be released as a single in its own right – so Situation, co-written by Alison and Vince, was used instead.
