“I call it, and my husband says it shouldn’t, “prog-pop” because this is an album based around the lyricism, based around the poetry and it’s also been written around the improvisation. So the way Guy Sigsworth and I work, he would send me a very simple track to which I would improvise and write the song to and then it goes back to him and he paints around it.
It’s very lyrical based. It’s not been amputated to fit to a certain radio station. It’s an album proper like they used to make in the ’70s.
[On the album title] “Other. That’s what I’ve always been. What I’ve always felt. And when you are young, that’s always a scary place to be, a confusing place to be. Now that I’m firmly entrenched in middle age – which is the best of all ages – suddenly you find the fact that you are not the same as a particular mainstream, that you don’t consequently don’t find appealing, is a blessing.”
~ Alison, BUILD interview, 2017
As part of the launch of the album, Other, there was a first in Moyet history: Alison hosted an exclusive listening party at The Hospital Club for competition- winning fans. They heard the album in its entirety three days before its release and were able to ask Alison questions.
Other was released exactly 35 years to the day after Yazoo recorded their BBC Radio session for John Peel.
